Naturopath by weekday and farmer by weekend. From August to November my husband and I travel home every weekend to my parents farm in Kingsville, Ontario for the harvest. I don’t like to brag, but I think we have the best apples in all of Southern Ontario. We boast over 10 varieties throughout the season.
The Farm Fresh Difference. The beauty of our farm is that it has remained a small, family owned orchard. This allows us to pick the apples as they become tree ripe. By the end of the season, each tree could possibly be picked 3-4 times. This results in the juiciest, crispiest apples you could ever want to eat.
Varieties (availability varies by week, please see table below)[accordion] [acc_item title=”Ginger Gold”] Light, crisp and juicy with a tart taste and mild in flavour. Green in colour and is considered one of the best early-season apples coming on in late August/early September. Great to cook with and to eat.[/acc_item] [acc_item title=”Mac’s”]Crimson and green in colour with bright white flesh, this apple has a tart taste with a refreshing acidity. Great for cooking and eating.[/acc_item] [acc_item title=”Royal Gala”]Originating from New Zealand, this Pink- Yellow’ish apple is sweet and juicy when it’s tree ripened …almost as good as candy. Best for eating, or mixing with other tart apples for baking. [/acc_item][acc_item title=”Golden Gala”] This little yellow apple is sweet and juicy like it’s cousin the royal gala. However, it’s skin is thinner and almost mimics a pear like flavor. Great for salads and eating.[/acc_item] [acc_item title=”Mutsu”] This giant green apple is known as Mustu in Japan and Crispin in the US. It’s a firm apple with fresh crisp white flesh and a tart taste. Enjoy it as an eating apple or to cook with. [/acc_item] [acc_item title=”Honey Crisp”] One of our most popular apples, this new designer apple is juicy and instantly refreshing. The flavour is sweet with a minor trace of acidity or tartness. This apple is best for eating however, you can cook with it, but be wary that it does have a high water content. [/acc_item] [acc_item title=”Ambrosia”] This Pink deliciously sweet apple, is all sweet with no trace of tartness. It’s crispy, juicy and all around yummy. Best used as an eating apple.[/acc_item] [acc_item title=”Red Delicious”] An intensely red apple with a sweet mild flavour. The flesh is juicy with a light crispness. Best consumed as an eating apple. [/acc_item] [acc_item title=”Golden Delicious”] When allowed to tree ripen, golden delicious is a rich and exceptionally sweet apple. It is also very versatile in the kitchen, excellent for eating and baking. [/acc_item] [acc_item title=”Empire”] A cross between a mac and a red delicious , this red coloured apple has a crisp and juicy consistency and a tart taste. It’s fantastic for cooking and baking and great for eating. [/acc_item] [acc_item title=”Fuji”] A late season apple, Fuji is an apple originating from Japan. It’s a hard, cripsy apple with a mild sweet taste. Best for eating. [/acc_item] [/accordion]
