Should You Take B Vitamins When Stressed?

If you’ve been feeling tired and stressed lately, you may have stumbled across using B vitamins for energy.   But are B vitamins really worth the hype? 

B Vitamins are group of 8 vitamins including B1 (thiamin), B2 (ribofalvin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folate or folic acid), B12 (cobalamin).   Each of the B vitamins has there own role to play in the body ranging from supporting the nervous system, cell metabolism, making red blood cells and converting your food into energy.  

Stress and B Vitamins

Let’s take a look at B6. B6 makes neurotransmitters such a mood boosting serotonin, helps to boost your immune system during times of anxiety and supports your adrenal function.  During times of high stress your body utilizes B vitamins at an increased capacity.  Studies have shown that B6 can be an “anti-stress” vitamin because it help’s the body withstand stressful situations and improves the body’s resiliency to stress. 

A number of the other B Vitamins also help to reduce stress and anxiety.  B3 and Vitamin B5 support the adrenal glands and Vitamin B9 (folate) and Vitamin B12 are also important in balancing mood and have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety.  

Unlike other vitamins and minerals, we don’t store B vitamins because as they are water-soluble.  So ideally we should be getting our B vitamins from our diet. 

B Vitamins in Food

  • Whole grains (brown rice, barley, millet)
  • Meat (red meat, poultry, fish)
  • Eggs and dairy products (milk, cheese)
  • Legumes (beans, lentils)
  • Seeds and nuts (sunflower seeds, almonds)
  • Dark, leafy vegetables (broccoli, spinach, kai lan)
  • Fruits (citrus fruits, avocados, bananas)

So if you’ve been under chronic stress and overwhelm, you may want to consider supplementing with B vitamins during times of elevated stress.  My advice is to use a B Complex.   A supplemental B Complex contains the whole family of B Vitamins to help support mood, reduce stress and enhance the body’s ability to tackle stressful situations.
