Exercise- Top 5 Tips To Stick To Your 2016 New Year’s Resolution
Is getting to the gym and exercising part of your healthy New Year’s Resolution to exercise? Many of us fall off the wagon over the holiday season and January can be the fresh start you’re looking for to get back to the gym or start exercising again. Exercising has so many amazing befits from improving sleep, boosting energy, supporting a positive mood and maintaining a proper body weight. So let’s roll up our sleeves and check out these 5 tips to help you be successful at keeping your New Year’s Resolution to exercise in 2016.
1. Exercise- Love It, Don’t Hate It!
Find a form of exercise that you will enjoy. If you’re a social person, try joining a team sport like ultimate frisbee, basketball, dodgeball or volleyball or try out a new class at the gym. If you prefer to work out alone, try changing up your weight resistence workouts or running or jogging. Exercise is meant to be fun, so find the form of exercise that you find enjoyable and work-it-out!
2. Make a Routine
Incorporating exercise into your daily routine can be a challenge at first if you’re just starting. It’s important to carve out a time in your day and “schedule” it in like you would your ND appointment or your dentist. Write it down in your agenda and check it off as the week goes by. If your not a morning person, don’t try to force yourself to a 6am spin class, maybe try to go straight after work when you have more energy. If you’re not a “gym” person, try using home videos or YouTube to access great workout videos that will have you sweating in no time! Check out the BeFiT Channel on YouTube for some great videos.
3. Get A Partner
Sometimes motivation can be tricky, having a friend or co-worker to workout with can help keep you on track! Try walking at lunch with friends from work, finding a jogging partner or go to the gym with a family member.
4. Eat Breakfast
Make sure to eat a breakfast high in protein and fibre. Protein and fibre are important at stabilizing blood sugar and help to keep you feeling fuller longer. This is the key to proper energy levels throughout the day instead of having energy levels that feel more like a roller coaster ride. The more energy you have, the more motivation you will have later into the day to help you stick to your exercise regimen. Try these protein rich egg muffins to start your morning off right!
5. No Pain, No Gain
No matter your fitness level, whenever you start a new fitness regimen, your muscles will likely be sore for a few days following your workout. It may be difficult to walk, pick up your smoothie cup (too many bicep curls or tricep dips) or sit when going to the bathroom (darn squats). Supporting your body post workout is essential to help muscle recovery. Try some of these tips to help you recover faster and get back to the gym.
- Muscle is broken down during a workout, so try having a protein smoothie post workout to help re-build.
- Try an epsom salt bath at night after your work out. Epsom salts are high in magnesium and will help to sooth and relax muscles.
- Soreness means you’ve worked hard enough to get results, but we need to help that muscle re-build. L-Glutamine is an amino acid stored in the muscle and for proper muscle repair, you may need to supplement with L-Glutamine help speed up recovery time.
So stick with your New Year’s Resolution to exercise and start feeling awesome again!
